نظرا لعدد صحيح ن المهمة هي العثور على كل شيء حلول متميزة إلى مشكلة ن-الملكات أين ن يتم وضع الملكات على ن * ن رقعة الشطرنج بحيث لا يمكن لملكتين مهاجمة بعضهما البعض.

ملحوظة: كل حل هو تكوين فريد من نوعه ن الملكات ممثلة على أنها التقليب [123....ن] . الرقم عند أنا ذ يشير الموضع إلى صف الملكة في أنا ذ عمود. على سبيل المثال [3142] يظهر أحد هذه التخطيطات.

فكرة بسيطة لحل مشكلة ن-كوينز هو توليد جميع التباديل الممكنة ل [1 2 3 ... ن] ثم تحقق مما إذا كان يمثل تكوين N-Queens صالحًا. نظرًا لأن كل ملكة يجب أن تكون في صف وعمود مختلفين باستخدام التباديل تلقائيا يعتني بتلك القواعد. لكننا ما زلنا بحاجة إلى التحقق من عدم وجود ملكتين على نفس قطري.
